A five-country study

Nyanja Health Research Institute has succeeded in landing a 5-country snakebite incidence study, working with partners in the African Snakebite Alliance to measure how often snakebites happen and what they mean for the people affected.

Snakebite is a neglected tropical disease that causes death and lasting disability, especially in rural farming communities. Reliable data on how often it happens remain scarce, which makes it hard to plan antivenom supply and treatment services.

What the study will do

  • Run household surveys to estimate snakebite incidence in each country.
  • Describe the health, social and economic outcomes for people bitten.
  • Understand how and where people seek care after a bite.
  • Share findings with ministries of health to guide antivenom policy.

What comes next

Fieldwork will begin once protocols and ethics approvals are in place in each country. The planned serpentarium and antivenom laboratory at our Salima campus will strengthen this work in Malawi.
